8-Year-Old Charged For Sexual Conduct With Sitter

(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

A mother is upset after a 14-year-oldbabysitter engaged in sexual conduct with her eight-year-old boy,and the eight-year-old was charged with lewd conduct.

Prosecutors have since dropped the charges against the boy, but his mother is still concerned. The sexual conduct occurred during a game of "truth or dare" whilethe boy was being watched by the babysitter.

Prosecutors say that, while the babysitter initiated the contact,the young boy was a willing participant."She dared my son to touch her breasts," says Michelle Grosbeck, the boy's mother.

After hiring the teenager to baby sit, Grosbeck got the feeling something was wrong.

"It was just that sense that something wasn't quite right with this14-year-old girl," she said. She asked her son what hadhappened.

"He just came right out as if nothing was awry, and juststarted talking about what had happened." Grosbeck went to police and child protection workers, and the casewent to the district attorney, after which her son, age eight, hadbeen charged with an act of lewdness with a minor. Grosbeck says the Salt Lake County District Attorney told her both the child and teenager were equal participants. But Mrs. Grosbeck didn't believe that.

"My son is eight, he's a little boy. He does not have the ability toparticipate on the same level as a fourteen-year-old," she said.

Although the charges against her son were dropped, she is concerned that the same thing could happen to other victims of sexual abuse." I don't want parents to be afraid to go to the state agencies thatare supposed to be protecting our children when things like this happen, out of fear that their children are going to be charged.

The district attorney's office confirmed the charges had been made,and that they had been dropped. Other than that, they wouldn't comment.
The Division of Child and Family Services also declined to comment.

many have dismissed Constantine as a superficial, action-oriented, comic-book film, but methinks that's a bit hasty . . .

Keanu Reeves plays the lead, very much as extension of his role in the Matrix trilogy, which also was driven by a "holy war" theme (e.g., the safe haven of the "rebels" in the trilogy was a subterranean city called "Zion")

in Constantine, the protagonist's sidekick/chauffer is a plebe named Chas Kramer, played by Shia LeBeouf (a surname reminiscent of Beowulf, the first epic poem written in English, which also concerns spiritual warfare and the paradox of the Heroic Monster, likewise applicable to the Constantine character)

Wikipedia notes:

Statue of Emperor Found Among Rome Ruins

ROME - A sewer might be no place for an emperor, but it is precisely from an ancient drainage system that archaeologists have dug-up a large marble sculpture of Constantine, one of Rome's greatest leaders.

Archaeologists found the 24-inch-tall head last week while clearing up a sewer in the Roman Forum, the center of public life in the ancient city, said Eugenio La Rocca, superintendent for Rome's monuments.

"We can't be sure of why it was put there," La Rocca said Thursday at a news conference during which authorities showed the bust to the media.
One possibility is that the sculpture of the man who reunited the Roman Empire in the early fourth century and ended years of persecutions against Christians was unceremoniously used later to clear a blocked sewer, he said.

La Rocca called the statue a rare find, saying that its insertion in the sewer probably saved it from the plundering the Forum suffered after the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century.

"Many portraits have been found in Rome, but these days it's not easy to find one, especially of this size and so well preserved," he said.

Experts confirmed that the sculpture portrays Constantine by comparing it to coins and two other giant heads of the emperor that are kept in Rome's Capitoline Museums, La Rocca said. The Carrara marble head probably belonged to a statue of the emperor in full armor, and was erected in the part of the Forum built by the emperor Trajan after Constantine conquered Rome from a rival in A.D. 312.

The style and stern features used in all of Constantine's portraits also recall the traits of Trajan, who expanded the empire to its maximum size in the early second century.

"Trajan was the greatest emperor and Constantine considered him a model," La Rocca said.

During his reign, which lasted from 306 to 337, Constantine tried to stop the fracturing of the empire and sought to restore it to its ancient glory. Although not a Christian himself, he ended the frequent waves of anti-Christian persecutions by proclaiming religious freedom throughout his lands. He also moved the empire's capital to Constantinople — today's Istanbul — closer to the Eastern borders threatened by the barbarian invasions.

La Rocca said that restorers will now take charge of the work, which will probably be put on display next year in a museum being built in the Roman Forum.

An opinion poll on Tuesday showed Blair's rating as leader had soared to its second-highest level -- even as most voters think his decision to back the U.S.-led invasion has made Britain more of a target for terrorists.
Blair, who won a third term in May, proved his statesmanlike credentials with a firm but measured response to the July 7 bombings that killed 52 people and the failed attacks of July 21, analysts said.

That came on top of deft handling of Britain's presidency of the Group of Eight nations, a
European Union' crisis and London's victory over Paris to host the 2012 Olympics.

Male Violinist Sues Philharmonic

NEW YORK - A violinist who claims the New York Philharmonic fired him because he is a man says some of the women who were promoted ahead of him gave flowers and other gifts to their bosses.

Anton Polezhayev, 29, says in a lawsuit that he was asked to leave after the 2003-2004 season, in the last month of his 17-month probation, despite being told by orchestra officials that he was doing "a fine job" and that his playing was "perfect."

Polezhayev's lawyer, Lenard Leeds, said Friday that the Philharmonic's personnel manager, Carl R. Schiebler, even wrote a letter to a landlord on the violinist's behalf, saying he expected Polezhayez would be "a long-term member of the orchestra."

Meanwhile, Polezhayev says in court papers filed Thursday, seven female violinists won permanent jobs or were promoted over him, although some had less experience than he had, or had not auditioned for the positions.

Polezhayev's court papers and Leeds said that some of the women's progress was accomplished by giving gifts, including flowers and champagne, to musical director Lorin Maazel and Glenn Dicterow, the concertmaster or principal violinist.

Of the Philharmonic's 33 violinists, 20 are women, the orchestra's Web site says.

"I think that if I were exactly the same person in a female body they would keep me for life and never fire me," Polezhayev said Friday by telephone.

Eric Latzky, the Philharmonic's spokesman, said he had no comment on the lawsuit.

Polezhayev, a U.S. citizen since 1996, is a native of Russia where he began his musical education in Moscow. En route to the Philharmonic, he won or placed well in several international violin competitions.
During his Philharmonic probationary period, Polezhayev was supposed to have 13 meetings with orchestra leaders so they could give him feedback and progress reports, court papers say. No such meetings were held, he says.

After Polezhayev complained to Schiebler and Dicterow about what he considered gender discrimination, they brought his complaints to Maazel's attention.

Maazel told Polezhayev in a meeting that he was being fired for "unprofessional behavior" and because he "was not good for the orchestra," despite being a good violinist, court papers say.

The musician said no one had expressed concern before about his behavior. On Feb. 10, 2004, court papers say, he received a letter from Schiebler telling him he was being fired as a Sept. 19, 2004.
Polezhayev says in court papers he was actually fired "in part, due to his gender and/or because of his good faith opposition to discriminatory practices."

"There was long-term damage to my career," Polezhayev said in the phone interview. "I will have a lot of trouble getting a job with another good orchestra. Getting fired is a black mark on your career. All musicians know that."

Polezhayev's lawsuit names the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York, Maazel, Dicterow and Schiebler as defendants. He is demanding a permanent job, back pay, and unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

Leeds said that after his client was fired, he was forced to give up his Manhattan apartment and move back into his parents' Long Island home. The lawyer said Polezhayev has not worked since being fired by the orchestra.

The Philharmonic is currently in Vail, Colo., for a nine-day concert series.

House Votes to Extend Patriot Act

WASHINGTON - The House voted Thursday to extend the USA Patriot
Act, the nation's main anti-terrorism tool, just hours after televisions in the Capitol beamed images of a new attack in London.


hmm . . . rather a convenient set of coincidences, all these London bombings while the House is "considering" (hardy-har!) re-upping the (anti) Patriot Act . . .


As similar legislation worked its way through the Senate, House Republicans generally cast the law as a valuable asset in the war on terror. Most Democrats echoed that support but said they were concerned the law could allow citizens' civil liberties to be infringed.

After more than nine hours of debate, the House approved the measure 257-171. Forty-three Democrats joined 214 Republicans in voting to renew key provisions of the Patriot Act that were set to expire at the end of the year.

The bulk of the back-and-forth centered on language making permanent 14 of 16 provisions that had four-year sunset provisions under the original law, which Congress passed overwhelmingly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The bill also includes 10-year extensions to the two other provisions set to expire on Dec. 31, one allowing roving wiretaps and another allowing searches of library and medical records.

"While the Patriot Act and other anti-terrorism initiatives have helped avert additional attacks on our soil, the threat has not receded," said Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the
House Judiciary Committee'

Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the committee, said that while "I support the majority of the 166 provisions of the Patriot Act," the extensions could lessen accountability. "Ten years is not a sunset; 10 years is semi-permanent," he said.

President Bush' hailed the vote.

"The Patriot Act is a key part of our efforts to combat terrorism and protect the American people, and the Congress needs to send me a bill soon that renews the act without weakening our ability to fight terror," Bush said in a statement released by the White House.

As the House debated the legislation, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved its own extension of the bill, though it included only four-year extensions for the roving wiretap and records search provisions.

A competing bill also has been approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee, which would give the FBI' expanded powers to subpoena records without the approval of a judge or grand jury. That ensured further Senate talks on the terrorism-fighting measure. The House legislation will also have to be reconciled with whatever emerges from the Senate.

The House debate included frequent references to the attacks earlier in the day, two weeks after larger London blasts that killed 56, including four suicide bombers.

The roving wiretap provision, Section 206, allows investigators to obtain warrants to intercept a suspect's phone conversations or Internet traffic without limiting it to a specific phone or identifying the suspect. The records provision, Section 215, authorizes federal officials to obtain "tangible items" such as business, library and medical records.

Advocates argued that such powers already exist in criminal investigations so they should be expressly continued for terrorism investigations. They also cited safeguards in the bill, such as a requirement that a judge approve the records search.

One amendment, passed by a 402-26 vote, requires the FBI director to personally approve any request for library or bookstore records. Another successful amendment sets a 20-year jail term for an attack against a rail or mass-transit vehicle; a 30-year sentence if the vehicle carries nuclear material; and life imprisonment — with the possibility of the death penalty — if anyone is killed in such an attack.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., a former FBI agent, recalled using such tools in gang and child molestation investigations.

"All we do in the Patriot Act is say, `Look, if we can go after child molesters sitting in the library and bombers who we need to sneak-and-peek on a warrant, we ought to be able to go after terrorists,'" he said.
Critics heralded the bulk of the existing law, but said the sunsets were wisely inserted amid the inflamed passions following the Sept. 11 attacks, and should be retained to assess the long-term impact of the law.

A 19-year-old Coquitlam man was savagely beaten by a group of teenaged girls Friday night, making it the ninth swarming by teenagers in Vancouver in the last month.

Wesley Tommy Jack was drinking in Strathcona Park with about 12 other people -- one friend whom he had met through work, and the rest friends of his friend.

Between 2:30 and 3 a.m., a group of three or more girls, between the ages of 16 and 18, attacked him.

"I just remember some girl started to punch me," said Jack, who did not know any of the girls.

"I told her I wasn't going to hit her back.

When he regained consciousness at around 4 a.m., Jack went to his mother's house in Vancouver, where she called an ambulance for him.

"His face was just swollen," said his mother, Viriginia. "His whole cheekbone was almost up to his eye and both his lips were just swollen, swollen. Like double in size."

Jack moved to Vancouver from Vancouver Island last December. In March, he moved again, this time to a rooming house in Coquitlam.
"I told him, 'If you're going to drink here in Vancouver, you're new, stick to one or two,'" said Viriginia. "That's it. Make it your limit, until you get to know the people that you're with, and what they're like when they're drunk."

Traveling in Africa in part to empower its often disenfranchised women,
Laura Bush said Wednesday she would not automatically vote for a woman in a field of candidates for president of the United States.

"If a woman were to run, it would be exactly the same thing I would consider in any other election — and that is who I think has the best character, whose views are similar to mine," Bush told reporters as her plane brought her here from Cape Town, South Africa.

She raised — and then quickly rejected — the idea of supporting a Democrat. "I would vote for, in most cases, the Republican," she said and then added after a pause, "Maybe I should say in all (cases)."

Her predecessor as first lady, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, is likely seen as a potential Democratic candidate for 2008. Other women have also been mentioned as eventual White House hopefuls such as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (news, bio, voting record), R-Texas.

The first lady said she has no intention of ever running herself. "I've ruled out the possibility of running for president. I actually never considered the possibility of running for president," she said.

450 Sheep Jump to Their Deaths in Turkey


ISTANBUL, Turkey - First one sheep jumped to its death. Then stunned Turkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they had breakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping off the same cliff, Turkish media reported.

In the end, 450 dead animals lay on top of one another in a billowy white pile, the Aksam newspaper said. Those who jumped later were saved as the pile got higher and the fall more cushioned, Aksam reported.

The strategy behind yesterday's attacks was to hit "soft" targets and cause maximum casualties rather than aim for high-profile locations or public figures.

David Capitanchik, a terrorism expert at Aberdeen University, said the rush-hour explosions bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida. "There's no doubt in my mind that this is the work of al-Qaida or one of its nodes. They would never target a military base or the G8 summit. They choose the soft targets, ordinary people going about their everyday business, to cause maximum terror.

"Their philosophy is: why attack a tiger when there are so many sheep? We saw this in Bali, in Madrid and, of course, [on] 9/11. Coordinated attacks on a grand scale with ruthless disregard for human life - it's absolutely typical of al-Qaida and their allies. They don't even need to use suicide bombers for this type of attack because it's so easy to get on and off a bus or train leaving a bag with explosives behind."

indeed, after reading and watching reports on this incident today, what stood out was the absolute anomaly of JED's apparrently unconcerned appearance IN PUBLIC with Shasta

as to JED's "Fifth Nail" site -- not even slightly coincidentally, it refers to the apocryphal fifth nail the Roman soldiers were given at Golgotha, meant for christ's heart, as a tool of mercy, not torture, to shorten and end the agony of his stroll down History Lane

one Macedonian "legend" relates that a "Gypsy Smith" had to be scrounged-up at the last minute to forge christ's final nail (smithcraft and metallurgy were common occupations for "historical" gypsies and, of course, connote magick and, in particular, Masonry after the "line of Cain")

other Fifth-nail "legends" exist, but the above version is closest to reality -- and, importantly, to JED's mindset

in that version, "Gypsies" steal the Fifth Nail and with-hold it, thus extending the suffering of the son of man, and inaugurating what Joyce called "the nightmare of history" -- very reminiscent of that other major ongoing Crucificato of the West, the Grail-Cycle's Fisher-King and his genital wound, which likewise never heals

Lost notes on alchemy by Isaac Newton found

LONDON (Reuters) - A collection of notes by the 17th century English mathematician and physicist Sir Isaac Newton, that scientists thought had been lost forever, have been found.

The notes on alchemy were originally discovered after Newton's death in 1727 but were lost after they were sold at auction in July 1936 for 15 pounds ($27).


They were found while researchers were cataloguing manuscripts at the Royal Society, Britain's academy of leading scientists.


"This is a hugely exciting find for Newton scholars and for historians of science in general," Dr John Young, of London's Imperial College Newton Project, said in a statement on Friday.


Newton's celebrated work "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" (or Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) is considered one of the most important works in the history of modern science.


In it he formulates the three laws of motion and that of gravity.


Some scientists in Newton's time believed alchemy held the secret of how to transform base metals into silver or gold. Newton's notes were written in English in his own handwriting.


"It provides vital evidence about the alchemical authors Newton was reading, and the alchemical theories he was investigating in the last decades of the 17th century," Young added.

The notes will be on display at the Royal Society's annual Summer Science Exhibition in London which begins on July 4.
