Pra Ha Ha

The largest quake in state history, 5.6 magnitudinal, snarked Oklahoma on Saturday, November 5.

Earlier in the day, a foreshock of 4.7 hit Prague, OK.

The town was settled by Czech immigrants.  (AF denies responsibility and claims he was taking pictures of birds and buildings that day.  A likely story.)

Oklahoma is v big on dea-ley.  When crossing the state lines by road, one encounters a large sign reading:

OKLAHOMA IS A ZERO TOLERANCE STATE

Getting their wish apparently.

Praha sounds like the word 'prah' - threshold.

Quite a few Czechs moved to Chicago.

Strangely OK seems to have a large prairie-dog population

  • Oklahoma typically had about 50 earthquakes a year until 2009. Then the number spiked, and 1,047 quakes

  • "A 5.6-magnitude earthquake has killed at least seven people in eastern Turkey, and trapped many more under collapsed buildings.

About 20 buildings have collapsed, including a six-storey hotel in the city of Van, where dozens of aid workers and journalists were staying.

The quake late on Wednesday was centred 16km (10 miles) south of Van"

Van twinned, OK twinned . . . from yahoonews yestiddy:

Oklahoma earlier this week became witness to the state's biggest November tornado since reliable records began in 1950.

The tornado touched down in Tipton, Okla., earlier this week and was upgraded yesterday (Nov. 10) to an EF-4, the second-highest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Tornado damage scale, after a storm survey team analyzed its destruction.
